The demon was as magnificent as it was terrible. Merrick couldn’t contain his gasp at the sight of it. He had been sent, crucifix in trembling hand, to the ancient creaking ruin where this great evil had lain down its roots. His prayer was meant to cleanse the accursed soil, a cleanse born of voice and conviction.


But his conviction was faltering. This aberration, this great defilement of God’s design—he had never seen anything so beautiful in his life.


The demon stepped towards him out of the shadows and into the crescent of amber light cast by Merrick’s lantern. In his other hand he white-knuckled his holy cruciform emblem. The creature was tall, taller than he was, its sharp proud face crowned by a halo of hair as golden as its eyes. Without iris or pupil, they seemed to study Merrick no matter where he moved. Why, the thing looked like an angel.


Merrick dropped to his knees.


A chill breeze blew through the gaping walls of the ruin, drawing shivers from him as he knelt there, awaiting its command. He heard it speak, not with its mouth, but in a dark corner of his mind: My, what a lovely offering.
